    Question Reloading only javascript source file in a gadget

    Hi there.

    I am not all that great at coding, but would like to put together a windows sidebar gadget that keeps track and logs specific activities. Some daily, some weekly, some monthly, ect.

    I need to find a way to refresh a small imported java script every time a button is pressed without refreshing the entire form. Would also like to have it refresh automatically every hour if possible.

    The line of code to reload is <script src="http://www.dgdevelco.com/quotes/quotestxt.js"></script>.

    Here is the entire code:

    <html>
    <head>
    <title>Form</title>

    <style>
    body
    {
    margin: 0;
    width: 130px;
    height: 400px;
    background-image: url(bg.jpg);
    }
    </style>

    <script type="text/javascript">
    /*Enable Gadget Setting Functionality.*/
    System.Gadget.settingsUI="settings.html";
    </script>

    </head>

    <g:background style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;z-index:-999;no=repeat;" />

    <form name="Form">
    <table width="128" style="position: absolute; left: 1px; top: 1px;">
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="01"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 1</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="02"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 2</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="03"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 3</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="04"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 4</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="05"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 5</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="06"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 6</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="07"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 7</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="08"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 8</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="09"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 9</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><input type="checkbox" name="item" value="10"></td>
    <td style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">Item 10</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td colspan="2">
    <input type="submit" value="Submit" style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px; float: left;">
    <input type="reset" value="Reset" style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px; float: right;">
    </td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td colspan="2" align="right">
    <input type="button" name="Report" value="Report" style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px;">
    </td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td colspan="2">
    <font style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 10px; text-align: center;">
    <script src="http://www.dgdevelco.com/quotes/quotestxt.js"></script>
    </font
    </td>
    </tr>
    </table>

    </body>
    </html>

    I have tried iframe and while it looks nice for text wrapping, it will still reload the entire gadget. Any suggestions (preferably simple so my little mind and wrap around it) would be great! Thanks for looking. :)

    js
    Code:
    function addScript(u){

         sc2=document.createElement('script'); sc2.src=u;
       head.appendChild(sc2);

    Ummm...don't you need to invoke reloadScript( ) when the page first loads?

    As written, it won't invoke that script for 30 minutes. (Unless somebody pushes the button first, of course.)

    And what happens if somebody pushes the button twice within 20 seconds??

    Maybe do it thus?
    Code:
    var theScript = null;
    var theTimeout = null;
    function addScript(u){
       if ( theTmeout != null ) clearTimeout(theTimeout);
       var head=document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0],
       if ( theScript != null ) head.removeChild(theScript);
       theScript = document.createElement('script');
       theScript.src = u;
       head.appendChild(theScript);
       theTimeout = setTimeout(reloadScript, 30 * 60 * 1000 );
     }//end addScript()

    function reloadScript(){
      addScript("http://www.dgdevelco.com/quotes/quotestxt.js");
    }
    reloadScript(); // so the script gets added when the page loads
    ????

    Never done this, but looks like it makes sense. No?

    i didn't say to remove the existing tag, so it should work exactly as it did before...
    indeed, it should be left as a hard-coded html tag because a subsequent script may someday need guaranteed access to the script to load.
    the browser wait on hard-coded script tags during loading, but it won't wait for dom-added scripts, like the ones the result from the code i posted.

    2nd question: it would update the data, working exactly as expected.
    it doesn't hurt to have extra script tags, and i don't count on any certain order.
    i simply added the 20-second removal since this is a gadget that might run for days and days, and it should not be accumulating script tags the whole time.

    Old Pedant, your proposed changes could allow script tags to accumulate every button click by canceling previously scheduled scripts' timely removal...

    i don't see the need for that process or the use of globals here, but maybe you're getting at something i've overlooked.

    Hmmm...I was assuming that perhaps duplicate sets of variables and functions could cause trouble. If you are assuming that all browser will always only use the last loaded script vars/functions and ignore all prior ones, then you are of course correct. I'm just paranoid that some browser somewhere would muck it up.

    well, we're only talking IE here anyway, but all browsers load scripts in the same way, at least as far as this pattern is concerned.

    your post did make me bother to check out the remote script, and unfortunatly, it looks like this sort of solution will not work for him:

    Code:
    function showQuotation(){document.write(Quotation[whichQuotation]);}
    i have managed to sandbox a remote document.write call into an iframe, where it can be harvested by the DOM, but it's pretty complicated.

    might do a search for a post by me showing the code i cooked up if anybody is interested...

    Well, heck, if all he's doing is changing the quote in the <iframe>, why not just get rid of the iframe and do it all in a <div>???

    Code:
    function showQuotation()
    {
        var rq = Math.floor( Math.random() * Quotation.length );
        document.getElementById("QUOTE").innerHTML =  Quotation[rq];
    }
    ...
    <body onload="setInterval(showQuotation,30000);">
    ...
    <div id="QUOTE" class="whatever"></div>
    Nutso to use document.write for that, in any case.

    Thanks for all your help. I am obviously doing something very very wrong and just can't seem to get it to work in the browser or gadget

    Code:
    <html>
    <head>
        <title>Form</title>

    	<style>
    		body
    		{
    			margin: 0;
    			width: 130px;
    			height: 400px;

    		}
    	</style>

    	<script type="text/javascript">

    If I have to go iframe, I will, but since this is a gadget, it would be better if it were all in one.

    yes, you have to "go iframe", or perhaps object.
    if you can alter the script, you can use avoid the iframe.

    just make a small html page with a meta refresh, no custom javascript required.

    Thanks, but I am beginning to think that this is impossible. I will do an automatic reload in the web browser, but not in the gadget. The button doesn't work at all. Hopefully my ignorance is the only problem with the code.

    main.html
    Code:
    <html>
    <head>
        <title>Form</title>

    	<style>
    		body
    		{

    			width: 130px;
    			height: 400px;
    			background-image: url(bg.jpg);
    		}
    	</style>

    	<script type="text/javascript">
    		/*Enable Gadget Setting Functionality.*/
    		System.Gadget.settingsUI="settings.html";

    		/*Enable the quotes reload*/
    		function addScript(u){
       			var head=document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0],
        		sc2=document.createElement('script'); sc2.src=u;
       			head.appendChild(sc2);
       			setTimeout(function(){ head.removeChild(sc2); sc2=null;}, 20000)

    remove all the old script stuff, it won't work.

    try this:
    Code:
    function getNewQuote(){
      var if1=document.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[0], src= if1.src;
       if1.src=""; setTimeout(function(){if1.src=src;}, 100);
    }

    <input type="button" value="reload script" onclick="getNewQuote()" />
