    Tools for debugging javascript

    Hi,

The debugging post in the FAQ for this forum was last edited in 2004.

I have experimented with several of the tools mentioned including Venkman, VS2005/IE, Op9 and none seem perfect. What do you experience javascript programmers use to debug your code these days?

In particular, I need to be able to debug script that is inline and referenced from an SVG file that is either supported natively by the browser (Op9, FF2) or hosted by a plug-in (Adobe SVG Viewer/IE).

    Tx, Windy

    - Visual Studio and Office both provide excellent debuggers for iew.
    - Venkman is problematic with ff, I suggest you use mozilla seamonkey if you want to use Venkman.
    - Firebug is an excellent alternative to Venkman for ff.
    - Opera's debugging tools are getting better.
    - WebKit/Safari is getting worthwhile debugging tools now.

There's no better debugging tools than these at the moment, and if that's not good enough for you, then you should be really glad you're doing this now and not five years ago, because then there were no debugging tools worth mentioning at all.

I'd say seamonkey/venkman is best debugging environment. Ff/firebug a close second.

Anyways, the nature of browsers is that you need to learn debugging in all of them anyway, since behaviours are similar but not quite identical, and support is patchy with different browsers having different support patterns.

Thanks for those thoughts liorean. I will try your suggestions on Venkman and Firebug.
