    visitor detection

Is there a jQuery-only solution to detect the current number of visitors on your site? Similar to when viewing eBay auctions and the little popup notification says "1 person is viewing this item per hour"? I'm unable to use ajax or php, so am I out of luck?

Since Google Analytics is the first thing to come to mind and that uses PHP, I'm curious why you can't use php. Are you locked into a server that does not have it?
