    Embedding sound in CSS site

    Hey all,
    Okay, here is the situation:

The website I am trying to add sound to is done almost entirely in CSS. I would like to add an optional music track to the site, such that the music continues to play and does not restart each time a user clicks on a new page in the site. Is this possible?

I understand that doing it with frames or a pop under are options, but I would REALLY like to avoid having to do that and thus far I keep striking out trying to figure out how to make it work.

Thanks in advance, I'm a newbie with this stuff so any help will be really appreciated.

You can either do the entire site in Flash or use Frames, those are your only options.

Thank you for the prompt response.

That is what I was afraid of. If I use frames, is it possible to have it so that the frame for the audio is just the side of the 'on/off' button?

Umm yeah I don't see why you can't do that. If you are going to use a frameset then just make the frame wide enough or tall enough depending on if you use rows or cols and put the music code in the smaller frame.

Great. Thanks, I really appreciate your help. I was really hoping there would be a way to do it without frames but I guess that just isn't to be.

I think I'm going to look into doing it so that the 'on' button triggers a popup flash window. I imagine this to be the easiest way. Any things you can think of immediately that would make this easier? I"m pretty new at this.

    Thanks again.

Well, it seems to be the 'norm' if there is such as thing, that the user has the choice of whether to listen to music or to turn it off.

If they choose not to listen, then they have no need of the music control panel. If they do wish to listen, then they will need it. So I would simply put a link on my page to link to a music panel in a pop-up window and then they can use it as they like. My link would say, something like, 'Background Music' or 'Listen to my Music'.

Maybe others won't agree but, I don't think there is a problem with pop-ups per se, so long as they have been triggered by the user and they are for extra useful stuff relative to the site's content.

It's the annoying adverts that pop up, 'themselves', that annoy me and also, a site, which makes an array of pop ups open just to navigate their site (or get lost in, more like).

The pop-up will just be blocked anyway... So I'd make a topbar or something like that with a flash player in it. That way they can simply turn it off, and you can even have multiple tracks to choose from.

Hi all, thanks for the feedback.

We're definitely going to make the default be sound off, and the window will only appear if they click the button.

The top bar sounds like a good idea but I'm having a little difficult of a time imagining it. I don't suppose you can think of any example where I could see one like it?

The client still isn't thrilled about the idea of a pop-up at all, so the less noticeable the better since there doesn't seem to be any other way to do it aside from frames (nightmare!)

    Thanks again.

I'm not even thrilled about the use of music at all, much less a frameset or any type of frames but here you go. Its a frameset, with a music player in top. If you want to add a specific song send me the url to the song and I'll change the fla file or you can change it yourself. Here is a brief tutorial on how to edit the file using Flash MX Professional 2004. Here is a zip file that contains all of th files you will need.

Wow thank you soooo much I really appreciate that.

I was able to edit the sound to the necessary track.

Thanks again you have no idea how much that has helped.

Yeah, what I meant is that if you went with a pop-up window the chances are good that the client's internet settings would end up blocking the music window anyway regardless of whether or not he meant to trigger it.

Just out of curiosity, is this something that the buzz-tastic AJAX would be suited for? i.e. it allows authors to have an ostensibly 'static' page (with a fixed muzak player), whilst allowing users to navigate around in a way that otherwise resembles a typical, multi-page site.

I given AJAX only a cursory glance and have no plans to jump on the bandwagon. I was just wondering if my understanding of its potential uses and capabilities is basically correct. (probably not)

I know that there IS a way to get a sound file to play without interuption while changing pages other than frames but I didn't bother complicating the thread because I didn't know how to do it. heh. AJAX might be the missing link.
