    CSS Code Screen Size Stretching Background

    Hi, I have an eBay auction and I would like to keep the black background narrower with the text, maybe around 960px regardless of screen size because the background stretches with different screen sizes. I think this code is CSS.

    <TABLE id=mainpage style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; WIDTH: 100%" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0>
    <TBODY>
    <TR>
    <TD>
    <STYLE type=text/css>
    /*
    */
    #mainpage {
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
    line-height: 1.5em;
    font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size: 12px;
    color: #000000;
    background: #000000;
    }
    a:link, a:visited { color: #ffffff; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal; }
    a:active, a:hover { color: #99FFFF; text-decoration: underline; }
    p {
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    }
    img {
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    border: none;
    }
    .cleaner { clear: both; width: 100%; height: 0px; font-size: 0px; }
    .margin_bottom_10 { float: left; width: 100%; height: 10px; font-size: 1px; }
    .margin_bottom_20 { clear: both; width: 100%; height: 20px; font-size: 1px; }
    .margin_bottom_30 { clear: both; width: 100%; height: 30px; font-size: 1px; }
    .margin_bottom_40 { clear: both; width: 100%; height: 40px; font-size: 1px; }
    .margin_bottom_50 { clear: both; width: 100%; height: 50px; font-size: 1px; }
    .margin_bottom_60 { clear: both; width: 100%; height: 60px; font-size: 1px; }
    .margin_right_10 { margin-right: 10px; }
    .margin_right_60 { margin-right: 60px; }

    Trying to use CSS with a load of code that obsolete is a losing proposition. You need to have markup that is from this century. All the obsolete inline attributes in the markup make the CSS moot. When a CSS property runs into the obsolete junk it is impossible to predict what the result will be in a given browser.
    100% standards compliant code is 100% correct 100% of the time.
    one of my toys from my repository and perhaps some help getting help

    Thanks for the reply, I do not understand what you mean? Is it not CSS that I pasted? I thought it was CSS and that CSS is a newer code than HTML. I just thought there might be a code or an invisible box that would add a fixed border to the sides.

    The center tag is obsolete. The font tag is obsolete. The following attributes are obsolete:
    align, border, cellspacing, cellpadding, width.

    Most of what you posted is markup (HTML) and all the junk in it will interfere with the CSS, so it is impossible to say what the CSS will actually do.

    Hello Ags911,
    While COBOLdinosaur is right about the deprecated code, it's hardly worth re-writing an ebay auction.

    See if you can add this bit highlighted in red to your CSS -
    Code:
    /*
    */
    #templatemo_content_panel {
    width: 960px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    }
    #mainpage {
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
    line-height: 1.5em;
    font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size: 12px;
    color: #000000;
    background: #000000;
    }
    a:link, a:visited { color: #ffffff; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal; }
    a:active, a:hover { color: #99FFFF; text-decoration: underline; }
    p {
    margin: 0px;
    Validate often DURING development - Use it like a splelchecker | Debug during Development |Write it for FireFox, ignore IE
    Use the right DocType | Validate your markup | Validate your CSS | Why validating is good | Why tables are bad

    Hi thanks that's great, the text is now neatly boarderd and doesn't stretch like before. How do I make the black background narrow match the width of the text without re-writing the code as I want to use it as a template for other auctions? Thank you again for your help.

    You mean you want to add a black background? Like this -
    Code:
    <STYLE type=text/css>
    /*
    */
    #templatemo_content_panel {
    width: 960px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    background: #000;
    }

    Thank you! So is the width: px what will change the width of the black background or would I have to code it all again? I think there are some tables or something in the template that keeps the text and pics structured maybe. But there is a bit or redundant code for things that aren't referenced anymore that I still have to take out.
