    Image mapping backgrounds

    I know that you can image map images like so:

    Code:
    <img src="planets.gif" width="145" height="126" alt="Planets" usemap="#planetmap">

    <map name="planetmap">
      <area shape="rect" coords="0,0,82,126" href="sun.htm" alt="Sun">
      <area shape="circle" coords="90,58,3" href="mercur.htm" alt="Mercury">
      <area shape="circle" coords="124,58,8" href="venus.htm" alt="Venus">
    </map>
    (source: w3schools)

    But is it possible to image map the background? If I was displaying a picture like:

    Code:
    <body background="somelinkhere.png" bgproperties="fixed" >
    how could I map links into the image?

    You map the body image the same way as you have shown. This was used as a fun type of menu back in the day.
