    CSS: "Sidebar"

Hi everyone. I have this section that I'm doing for school, so we can't touch the HTML. I would like the little sidebar with the three lion pictures and "See Also" text to extend across the entire left side of the page. Is there any way to do that? The only thing we can add are DIVs, IDs, Classes, and Spans.

    My html is here:

    My css is here:

    Thank you for your help.

what do you mean by you cannot change the html? Do you mean you can only add to it? If you cannot change the html, then you cannot add new elements such as divs or spans.

Please clarify. Also side note, forum rules say we don't help with homework, but if you can clarify the rules you have to follow, perhaps we can nudge you in the right direction to find a solution

Thanks, basically, we can't touch or rearrange existing html, or restructure it, we have to do it with CSS.

I'm trying to get the little sidebar that's a different color to extend along the entire portion of the page, but I'm not sure how to do it. I'm having problems, because I've been trying to float the top two sections right at 720px width, and it's not floating. I may be having some specificity issues, but I'm not sure.

But I'd like the little bar to extend across the entire left side if that's possible. If not, it's okay. It was just something extra I was hoping to add to make it look nicer.

I can add additional <div> and <span> though, and give those classes and ID's, but that's pretty much it.

Okay, so I got the floats to work when I redid the nesting in the HTML.

Yay! Okay, but I still don't know or understand how to make the whole area that side-bar color:
