    How did Coding Forum do it?

    I’d like to do exactly what the Coding Forum pages do.

    Each thread is listed in a TD which has a class of alt1 and a title which pops up when you hover over the TD

    The only thing I found in the page source was the definition of the background and color the class alt1.

    What other code was used to make this happen? Where can I get the source?

    The pop up is the "title" attribute you can see in the <td>

    I can see that it is the title, but how did they get it to pop up in a box when you place your cursor over the TD area.

    I think that's just standard functionality of "title". Try it:
    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
    <html>

    <head>
    <meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type">
    <title>Untitled 1</title>
    </head>

    <body>
    <table>
    <tr><td title="details about this item">Item 1</td></tr></table>
    </body>
    </html>

    CodingForums uses a vBulletin template. So why not just purchase one yourself, and not code one entirely yourself? Many other websites do the same

    In most browsers that's what the title attribute does - the few that don't put the text in the status bar instead.

    The title attribute attached to any tag in the body of the page will do the same thing. There's even a "feature" in Internet Explorer where if you leave the title attribute off of an <img> tag that IE will generate the attribute for you with a copy of the alt text that is supplied for those who can't see the image.

    That is Internet Explorer treats <img src="something.jpg" alt="text description"> as if you had written <img src="something.jpg" alt="text description" title="text description"> so if you want IE to work the same as other browsers you need to code all your image tags where you don't want a title as <img src="something.jpg" alt="text description" title="">

    Thanks for the input. I happen to be working on a website to show how Variable HTML works in conjunction with MySSI. I want to create a table showing the various cascading style templates and as your cursor moves over each element of the template the content of that CSS file will appear on the screen. Give me a few weeks and I’ll post back here a way to view what I’m working on and also a link to our new contact page so you can ask questions directly.

    The script and program will be freeware.

    I did a preliminary post of the page that I am working on.

    http://www.variablehtml.com/settings.htm

    I want to thank everyone for the help so far and naturally ask the next question that I already know the answer to!

    Not all the titles are there yet, but if you view the page with FireFox and mouse over “large” or “small” entries on the background line, the pop up looks like it should. When you do the same with Internet Explorer 8, the lines are too short and it chops off the bottom of the title.

    Like I said, I probably know the answer “MircoSoft writes crappy code”.
    Here’s my favorite quote “I love standards, there are so many to choose from”.

    Back on topic, are there any setting that can be used to make Internet Explorer display the right stuff?

    I know, silly question!

    PS: please excuse the extra table lines at the bottom of the page and the new6 link at the top, like I said, I posted it early!

    PPS: If anyone is interested in playing with this script, contact me, it is freeware!
