Span What does it mean, and for what is it used?

Well, when reading through codes, I see sometimes the "span" tag. I don't really understand what it means and for what it is used. Could someone explain this to me, and maybe show an example?

    Many thanks.

A span tag is the one tag that has no m eaning or default styling of its own. It is used to provide a way to attach an id or class to whatever it contains.

Hmm okay, I see. I guess I understand it a bit now. I now also realise something when it could be used.

    Many thanks.
