    webpage display html tags

    I am a beginner to web development and I uploaded a very simple html document but when I go to the url the page just mimics the code and displays all of the tags. I am trying to learn html but I've been stuck with this problem for the last few hours. I'm sure it is something very simple that I am overlooking and someone with experience would be able quickly point out my error(s). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    The url is http://www.outdooradventurist.com/ Below is my simple html.

    <html>
    <head>

    Hello monson
    Your <p class="p1"></p> is valid code but the stuff inside those p tags, like &lt;html&gt; is escaped code which is how you present code without rendering it in an html document.

    What editor are you writing your code with? More than likely that program is the source of your problem?

    Thank you Excavator and Amitsh.

    Excavator: I'm using TextEdit and I didn't have the preferences set for plain text. I changed the preferences, saved it, uploaded it again and now the problem is solved. Thank you for pointed that out. It was a simple error to fix but I would have never figured it out without your help.

    Do you recommend any other text editors that would be better?

    There is nothing wrong with notepad. A couple cheatsheats to remind you of HTML/CSS syntax and you're set.
    That's the simple and free version.

    notepad ++ would be the next step up? I think. Look at http://notepad-plus-plus.org/
