    This is probably not what you're talking about, but technically you can create custom tags.

    Browsers will technically accept any tag you give it, it just wont know how to treat it, and it wont validate. But for example, if you wanted to use new HTML5 semantic elements like nav, footer and header, you can but you just need to define in the css how they should behave so older broswers can understand.

    Ie:

    Code:
    article, aside, details, figcaption, figure,
    footer, header, hgroup, menu, nav, section {
    	display: block;
    }
    but in theory you could add another tag that you made up in there like
    Code:
    explodingmonkey{
    	display: block;
    }
    and then <explodingmonkey></explodingmonkey>

    would function like a block element and allow you to style it as such.

    Coldfusion support custom tags.

    @msevrens: I tried these custom tags but it was not working w/ Chrome and FF.
    Will have to find it out..

    Maybe I misunderstood completely what the OP is asking. I took it to mean he wants to create a whole new tag...ie <newTag></newTag>.

    There are ways to create custom span tags I think. I was doing some reading and found many articles on google, but most are several years old that I found.

    One is here.

    If you use an XHTML !DOCTYPE you can create custom tags.
