Meta Tags, Search Engine Optimization help!

Ok, iv created a site using php, html, but i haven't a clue about SEO, or any of these tags etc, i got a few questions in mind and it would be a great if anybody could help

ok firstly how important are tags? how many can i use? should they differ page to page?

Is the meta description important, should it be the same on every page in the head tags

and lastly i use php, mysql to post news articles , so with every news article post should i have new meta tags describing the content of the article , and if so how do i go about doing this?

sorry if its a ll a bit broad, im jsut trying to get my head around SEO and these tags

    thanks again

By tags you mean keywords, correct? Meta keywords supposedly are not as important to at least google as they once were, but I certainly still use them. I think meta discription keywords are more important.

Also, placing keywords in your heading tags, page titles, image alt and title tags, and even within the first few words of your content is more important than most anything.

Yes these can and probably should change just a bit with each page. For example, your home page can contain most any words you can think of that relate to your sites theme and content, including your sites name, but when you go to an article page, those can change to reflect more specifically what that particular page and article is about while still keeping the keywords that are SITE relevant.
