Download Firefox’s Firebug add-on or use the built-in developer consoles in Chrome, Safari, or Opera to inspect the source code. You’ll find that these are just elements (divs) that span across the viewport (they do that by default) and have a different background color or image.

You can easily do that yourself: Put three divs (with some content) in a plain HTML document and apply a different background color to each (along with some padding etc. – and remove default margin/padding from the body element)). That’s how it works.

Just simple divs with the proper CSS styling and background colors. Nothing extremely unusual in the HTML or CSS files.
