    CSS works in Firefox but not in IE, please help

    I'm fairly novice at CSS but I was pleased to get things working as I wanted in Firefox but very disappointed to view the same code in Internet Explorer.

    First problem is on this page http://www.orientalrugsonline.co.uk/glossary/Gabbeh/ looks a complete mess in IE! The images don't align and where there is a status message SOLD or RESERVED, the image box expands.

    The code is best seen from "view source" (if you're interested in the jsp fragment that generates it, this is attached as a text file as I can't upload jsp to this forum)

    One thing I've had to code my way round is that when I want to insert the status message SOLD on an image, the image moves down so I corrected this by pushing it up again as follows <div style="position:relative; top:-27px; z-index:1">. This works in Mozilla but I'm sure there's a neater way!

    Second problem is here, for example: http://www.orientalrugsonline.co.uk/...564&type=stock. I have a zoomify image. Mozilla puts the status on top but IE doesn't! Before I started with whizzy zoomify images I just used straight <img>, all worked fine in both IE and firefox. Here for example.. http://www.orientalrugsonline.co.uk/...519&type=stock

    I've looked on the web for solutions but can't find any. I've experimented with everything I can think of but no joy. Again, code is best view from source. I've got quite a lot of inline CSS but any other is in the attached main.css file.

    Very grateful for any help on this

    you have no doctype

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="en">

    Thanks Met. I've done that now but my problems in IE are still there. Any other ideas?

    You have
    <!--
    Gabbeh Glossary page
    11/05/06 JN Initial jsp version
    17/05/06 JN Update for absolute refs for directory structure
    21/08/10 JN New glossary with products
    -->

    above your DOCTYPE. Anything before DOCTYPE will turn IE into quirks mode.
