    Compatibility problem with IE + eBay

    Hello,

    I have designed a template to list items on ebay and I have some compatibility issues with internet explorer (8 in this case..i assume other version as well).

    Here is a beta test of the item I've put up for sale with my new template:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=300451388766

    The part of the page that is mine is this: (self hosted)

    http://www.drifo.com/ebay/zpxr/XLR_Analog.html

    If you open it with firefox, everything works perfectly with the right proportions, however in internet explorer there are a few anomalies.

    And even more, it seems from one COMPUTER to another on the same version of explorer, we encounter different bugs...

    On my computer for example when i open a fresh version of explorer, it all loads up with the right margins but the orange icon in the top right search is missing and the button in the bottom bigger search is also missing.

    the margins between the pictures in the 2 bottom boxes (payment and policies) are also different than firefox.

    Where things realy start to go wrong is when i hit F5 and do a refresh...I get alot of marging errors for different sections...i cleared my cache to try and avoid this problem but it happens even on some other computers.

    I'm at a crossroad where im wondering if I have to do different CSS files for explorer and firefox or if I can still salvage this by doing a "quick fix"

    Any input would be appreciated!! (i wish explorer would die already)

    Oh just for the sake of explaining it a bit more thoroughly: the website itself when self hosted appears fine in both browsers, its in the confines of the ebay site that it acts weird in explorer. Could be due to their own css code which frankly i didnt look at much.

    The locally hosted page has the same issue with the missing background images. It seems IE is a bit odd with background images on buttons. It just might be worth trying to replace this:

    Code:
    .search button.search_header{
    	cursor: pointer;
    	height: 18px;
    	width: 19px;
    	background-image: url(http://www.drifo.com/ebay/zpxr/templates/listings/images/search_header.jpg);
    	text-decoration:none;
    	float: right;
    	margin: 3px 5px 0 0;
    	position: top;
    	position: right;
    }
    with this:

    Code:
    .search button.search_header{
    	cursor: pointer;
    	height: 18px;
    	width: 19px;
    	background: transparent url(http://www.drifo.com/ebay/zpxr/templates/listings/images/search_header.jpg) no-repeat top left;
    	text-decoration:none;
    	float: right;
    	margin: 3px 5px 0 0;
    	position: top;
    	position: right;
    }
    This does the trick using the IE Dev toolbar. Obviously this shouldn't make any difference, but then this is IE....

    I don't see any issues with margins, in IE7 at least, the page looks the same as in FF as far as I can see.

    There are, additionally, an awful lot of issues with your markup, which don't fix the missing background image but might well cause other issues. In particular on your locally hosted page your doctype has two extra characters at the end:

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"-->
    which stop further validation at the moment, and you have no <body> tags.

    the reason there is no body tag is because this whole webpage will be included within a ebay page (like i linked in my post). the body tag at that point serves no purpose since ebay already has one encompassing the whole site...same applies to doctype (which i left in for the purpose of testing locall, but seemed to have forgot to remove the 2 -- which are leftovers from when i made the line a comment for ebay integration purposes.

    i can add the body / fix doctype if itll help you help me

    here is whats happening on my computer + a couple of people that have looked into it for me. seems some people experience the problem i have (notably all laptop users if that makes any difference whatsoever) and some people like you get the same version even when they refresh the page multiple times... thats whats realy got me wondering what the problem is?!?

    here is a screen from my explorer on the first time load:
    www.drifo.com/ebay/screen_ie.jpg
    www.drifo.com/ebay/screen_ie2.jpg

    and here is how it looks after 1 or multiple refresh:
    www.drifo.com/ebay/screenrefresh_ie.jpg
    www.drifo.com/ebay/screenrefresh_ie2.jpg

    ill give the search button fix a try see if it fixes it! Lemme know if you need more info, and thanks for giving me a hand, this is a real nail biter.

    update 2: I updated the code to provide a what i think is a proper doctype (i took the one from ebay source code as i imagine thats how even my code will be rendered) and added a body tag as well.
