XHTML CSS DIVS TABLES what to do?

I am more on the graphic side of the business but am trying to hone my dev skillz. I have designed a totally image based website.. did the table slicing in ps3 (image ready). having some cross browser compat issues with the tables, and tables seem to be a little "last year" . What method would you suggest I use. Give me some guidance in the right direction and i can learn for my self.

google css sprites, kinda makes your slices useless... depending on the kind of slices you have.... but they can be awesome.

you could also make DIVS and use them in place of the tables, makes the divs the size of the slices, and setting their background to that of the sliced image file..

also, not sure about imageready 3, but ps cs4 has an option to slice and output as xhtml with css and divs.. (i couldnt get it to work how i wanted it to, but it is there)

also you might want to look at fireworks cs4 its like photoshop but for websites. (simple explanation i know)
