Absolute Values on a Fixed Width Template

My institution is making the move to a new fixed width template. The editable space is center aligned with non editable background space on the left and right sides of the content area. I have tried to use absolute value tags and have found that if the computer resolution isn't big enough or the explorer window isn't maximized the layers will shift to an undesired position. This is happening because the left value changes depending on the above mentioned resolutions/explorer window size.

Is there a way to set a start point for the left value that will end up being the same no matter what the resolution size or size of the browser window?

(I have currently gone with relative positioning, but it is less than desirable since I now need to work with negative values to get the layout that I need)

Any help would be much appreciated.

In most cases you're better off without absolute positioning as a general layout approach, and there shouldn't really be a need to use negative positioning very often.

Can you provide a link to your page or your full html/css to allow us to understand the issue better?

By the lack of any other posts I suppose that I am stuck with using relative positioning unless someone else has any coding that will assist me with setting a start point in the template for the absolute left values.
