    Exclamation simple html but need help asap!

    I need a table that has 1 row and 3 columns.

    The entire table must be 100% width of the screen, yet the center column needs to be 550 pix wide and centered between the 2 outer columns

    It has to be this table, and it can't be a table within a table.

    Is there anyway of doing this?
    and is this understandable?

    If so can you send me the code for this
    Thanks in advanced.
    Alex

    This sounds like a homework assignment since you put limits as to what can and can't be done. Is it?

    Here's the code:
    Code:
    <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
      <tr>
        <td>&nbsp;</td>
        <td width="550">&nbsp;</td>
        <td>&nbsp;</td>
      </tr>
    </table>
    Just to mention, if you put some text/content in the first cell only, the right one will collapse.

    Hope I helped

    havent used 100% tables in a while... But would that cause a horizontal bar to appear? Maybe we should add

    Code:
    * {
    margin:0;
    padding:0;
    }
    Or is that overkill??

    No Not homework, just learning how to use html, and possibly make a site for myself in the near future. Ive worked with photoshop for many many years and able to make sites in that, but putting it together is the part im trying to learn.

    What are your thoughts on dreamweaver? and is it a good program to start leaning with or is there something easier?

    Thanks Alex

    oh excellent, now that i see it, its more simple than what i thought. This should do for now.
    However, for future ideas, if i had text in the left and right cells, how do i keep them both the same size and the middle cell still in the middle?
    Or cant be done?

    Thanks
    Alex

    This is why tables dont work well with design. You can set certain widths to your cells, but sometimes browser will expand cells to make it work. So in my opinion it is better to use DIV's and float them and add margins or padding.

    To me its easier and the Xhtml is much cleaner and nicer.

    As far as dreamweaver, if you are a beginner it is a nice program it helps with alot of things. I use it all of the time. Just because its easier to create an input text with one click than writing it all out. I do however prefer the use of a program called CODA. They are very similiar but CODA is for more advanced coders... to an extent. Also i like the whole check in check out code ability. To where you can roll back to a page that worked before... if you break something. then once everything is good and you are happy than you commit the work.. and all is good. Any who look around but i would recommend Dreamweaver though. Good Luck!!!
