    Positioning for tables

    Hi!

    I have a big problem on my new version of my site. This is how it looks like right now http://www.thecharmedanor.com/sidan%5Fnya/
    I have one picture as my layout picture and then I have a smaller one that I want to be stretched. That works fine, until I'm going to position the other table I have in the code. When I try to do that, the background image that's going to be stretched doesn't work. Any suggestions?
    I'm so bad at explaining so I'll show you my code and I hope you will understand.

    Code:
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
    <title>The Charmed Manor - din svenska guide till förhäxad</title>
    <LINK REL=stylesheet HREF="style.css" TYPE="text/css">
    <!-- START Susnet REGISTRERINGSKOD -->
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://susnet.se/susnetstat.js">
    </script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    susnet_counter_id = 8025;
    susnet_security_code = 'fac8';
    susnet_node=0;
    register();
    </script>
    <!-- SLUT Susnet REGISTRERINGSKOD -->
    </head>

    <body bgcolor="#2e2e2e" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px">
    <table align="center" width="840px"><tr><td background="layout_1_middle.jpg">

    Just a thought.
    You dont have a DOCTYPE as the first line of your code.
    A DOCTYPE is essential.

    Also your url is not available.

    A lot of the content looks like it belongs in a list.

    You still do not have a doctype. Your site may not work on all browsers otherwise.
    Have a look at the "stickies" at the top of the page'

    Or try here. http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html

    Well, it's your problem, but I see no DOCTYPE. It should be the first line; before the <html> tag.

    I had it. But when I added it, a lot of bugs showed up. They disappeared when I deleted the doctype. I don't know what's wrong.
    What if I don't have a doctype? What's happening then? I'm a newbie in this area.

    If the DOC type messed up your site, then your code is wrong/faulty.
    With Doctype missing, it goes into a "Quirks" mode to do the best it can.
    Unfortunately different browsers respond differently to "Quirks" mode and will probably mess up.
    Have you tried your site with Firefox, Opera or earlier versions of IE all of which are in use.
    No DOCTYPE means that you cannot be sure what the viewer sees.

    Have you tried validating it. There is an official site and it's free.

    http://validator.w3.org/#validate_by_uri+with_options

    You can validate the html and the css etc.

    ah the good ol days of webdesign. i think 90% of my pages dont' have one yet but it's a personal hobby site i never advertise so i don't care. but i've leanred so much when designging for my friends site which i decided to build using xml transitional. i hope to one day be good enough to do strict but i always find myself being forced to use a certain code that strict doesnt' like. maybe i'm just noob.

    ANYWAY, if that guy is still interested in learning and making his site to look as awesome as it does for everyone, i highly recommend transitional for anyone starting out on trying to make their pages correct for for the first time. maybe even html 4.01 cause then he wont' have to convert all caps into small i think. O_o lol

    effpeetee post and link are good ones. wow. what's tihs? css sheets need one too? that's news to me! >.<
