    Is this existable?

    Valid XHTML iframe?

    Or should I go DIV chilling and puzzle myself around that?

    I believe it is valid, but iframes are a mess, and in the best case require JavaScript or messy HTML. Stick to divs.

    I am doing a DIV portfolio type thing, I am wondering how you
    would go about naming a div?

    If my div is named #portfolio {}

    And my xhtml <div id="portfolio" name="framebox">&nbsp;</div>

    Could I do <a href="image.gif" target="framebox">

    Err... I think you misunderstand what the <div> tag actually is. It does NOT function anything like iFrame. The <div> tag is usually used for placing content into it, and then positioning and stylizing them using CSS. Your coding as if it's an iFrame. Can you detail what your trying to do?

    Besides, I never told you not to use iFrames. You can use them, it's just that sometimes they tend to get a little messy.
