    aligning the left navigation

    Have a look at this and tell me what's causing the navigation not to align.

    I think something is wrong with the page because I don't see anything. I only see a yellowish background. No text. It looks as though you are also having some ASP issues.

    ok you have to refresh the page. That must be with the host. It shows blank at times. But wait and go back to check. I'm sure it's going to work.

    If you just want the columns so they are not so pegged to the left side,then that has to do with the absolute positioning of ul.spokesa and ul.spokesb. Change the left positioning to something like 30px and 200px, respectively.

    As an aside:
    "Note: Z-index only works on elements that have been positioned (eg position:absolute; )!" taken from here.
    I would just set the position of your a:hover span to absolute.
