advice on registering and robot prevention
I want to set up a web site and am particularly interested in the method of registration and preventing robots and possible DoS attacks.
When I registered for this forum 2 things were apparent:-
1. the user had to enter a special code of 6 or 8 characters [to prevent a computer from generating untold registrations I assume] - how is this achieved? Is there a prebuilt script that one can use?
2. an email was despatched to the given email address requiring the user to click the link [to confirm the email is valid I imagine] The link looked like
Does this activate what's known as a CGI program and pass it parameter[s] to be used to ID the user who tried to register and thus validate that the email address must be valid?
I'm particularly interested in ppoint 1. above in as much as if thee is a prebuilt scipt available
Thanks for any info

There are lots of different options out there.
For point #1, you might want to look in to CAPTCHA/image validation...
This probably belongs in General Web Design, or a Server Side category..
DanPHP Tip: If you want to use short tags (<? or <?=$var) then make sure short_open_tag is set to "1". It really helps.
