    Having trouble formatting a horizontal nav bar

    Havent programmed in html/css a lot so I am stuck. I want to take my <ul> and make it into a horizontal nav bar. Here is what I have so far. Both html and css are in the same folder. I cannot get the css correct to do in line menu.

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C///DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3c.org/TR/xhtmll/DTD/xthtmll-transitional.dtd">
    <html>
    <title>Austen Robinson</title>

    <head>
    <link href="austens.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

    </head>
    <body>

             <div id="header">
    		     <center><a href="#"><img src="ARLogo.png" alt="" title=""/></a></center>
             </header>
    		 </div>

    	     <div id="nav-menu">
    		 <ul>
    				<li class='active'><a href="#">Home</a></li>
    				<li><a href="#">Portfolio</a></li>
    				<li><a href="#">Resume</a></li>
    				<li><a href="#">Bio</a></li>
    				<li><a href="#">Contact</a></li>
    			</ul>
    		 </div>

    </body>
    </html>
    CSS:

    Code:
     li {
        list-style-type: none;
        margin: 0;
        padding: 0;
        overflow: hidden;
    }
    Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
