    recommended size?

Hi, I'm about to create a new web template and I need the appropriate size. What is a good size that'll fit on your screen perfectly? (average)

    Screen reader - width 0px
Handhelds - width usually under 150px
    Web TV - always 544px - you don't get a choice
A4 portrait - around 730px depending on the printer margins
Computer screens - between 100px and 10000px depending on screen resolution and browser settings

You should try to design so that it can handle all of these properly.
