What comes first Graphics, SEO or overall quality?

    Hi Friends!

I am an SEO and web design enthusiast. This is a topic that I always wanted to share with others. I believe SEO has its share of both good and evil in web marketing. These days most sites are designed in Search Engine friendly manner so that they can earn higher ranks. But it is often seen that there are many sites that are equal if not better than the top rankers in the Search Engines but never ranked higher. For example, “Frog Design” is a world famous design studio; but you can never find that website in Google first page if searched with the most popular keywords.

Frog Design can afford it because they are already the world leaders. But what about the rather smaller companies who surely have the expertise but not getting the exposure in web market due to the lack of “keyword optimization”.

This is a new website designed by my friend. The site looks good and very clear and particular about their services. But the less amount of content makes this site anything but SEO friendly. There is hardly any content and no landing page for the services they offer. It is been there for a while but as expected, it is not getting any higher ranks in Google. Please visit the site and let me know what are things this site exactly lacks or does it at all lack anything?

I'm not an SEO expert by any means, and I personally think the whole business of SEO is a little bit like the crash diets you hear about: Everybody wants to know the "secret" of getting a higher Google search ranking, kind of like how everyone wants to know the "secret" of how to lose weight, but the bottom line is that it's just good old-fashioned content and linking that increase a page's visibility on Google, just like when it comes down to losing weight, the only truly effective methods are eating less and exercising. In both cases, people try to work some kind of alchemy to change the "laws of the 'Net" (or the laws of physiology), but in the end there's no substitute for buckling down and generating content (or getting on the treadmill).

As far as the page you linked, you're right about there not being a whole lot of content. Doesn't really give anyone a reason to visit more than once. The site's code validates, which is good, and while it's reasonably semantic (uses lists appropriately), it does have a touch of divitis--I don't see any header tags at all, for instance.

This page has some good tips too.

This post would fit better in the "General Web Building" forum. Ask a mod to move it there.

SEO is a bit like a dance, you've got to keep at it if you want to avoid tripping up and it takes a while to learn how to be good at it.

So when people start talking about improving SEO I always look at what they want to do and what they are trying. If what you are doing now doesn't work, then stop doing it. In this case, there is practically no content. How will a site get indexed when it lacks enough contextual clues for a search engine to place it somewhere?

Its about a good balance, graphics are important to visitors, but CONTENT IS KING.

As msuffern mentioned, for a better rank in search engines, you really need to make your document semantic!

To write the same title semantically so that a computer understands that this is a title, you would use the following code:

    <h1>This is a heading</h1>
Currently your site contains no such(headings from h1 to h6) semantic element. You could check this by "Information=>Document Outline" option of web-developer tool bar(FF)

overall quality, graphics and seo, in that order.
overall quality means a good content, valid code, good graphics, user firendly, and many other thing techinal or not. This include graphics,
seo is just a optimisation process, when everything is well done, to increase web visibilty.

    best regards

Content should come before anything else. Graphics are just a fancy way to display that content. However if the content is terrible, no huge artistic logo is going to keep the visitors coming back.

SEO comes last. Search Engine Optimisation. You can't optimise what isn't there.

    Hi.,
Seems the site is tight with regards to several SEO activities, notwithstanding the good feedback above...

My thoughts, written as they occur (sorry) are...
Longevity. I've two sites (A & B), very similar. A) is very actively SEO'd while the other B) hasn't given it any attention - B) gets listed more often. Main reason.... been around longer. (Not an scientific assessment.). Only thing you can do about that is... be around a while.

Activity is the other one... your site has a very 'static' feel as in the content doesn't look like it gets updated much. Impressions can be wrong. I have a young web site C) which gets listed high because the client is big on regularly updating it.

End of the day all this SEO... the degree of competition in certain fields I think renders it a bit of a potentially futile exercise. Competition out there for those same keywords. Think how many 'design', 'software' etc., companies are on the internet all after the same search phrase/words. My young site C) is quite specialist so it's immediately got an advantage...

    Hope that makes sense.

On the question of which is first... well., yep I'd say quality - appropriateness - of content.... though I'd propose the idea that at some point SEO shuffles to the front if, and only if, search phrase traffic is an important audiance. Site B aren't interested in visits from searches, though they're nice to get, they use their site for face-to-face and phone, and for clients they've a working relationship with.

All IMHO... hope some of this is informative/helpful, just my observations.
    Cheers
