Design your image in photoshop then jump to ImageReady, (Ctrl + Shift + M,) select your file format from the menu at the top right of the window (there are a few other options in that area as well). Then File -> Save Optimized As.... (Ctrl + Shift + Alt + S).

    And viola, your done!

I should add that this is in PS7.

If you can, just stay out of imageready -- it writes horrible code, and you can compress your images by not worrying about jumping to a new program. If you have your image already done, just go:
    file > save for web...

That option is in photoshop, just like in Imageready, without having to worry about launching a new program. A new interface will pop up and you can control on the right hand side if you want a jpeg, gif, or png... you can control the numbers of colors for gif/png, and if you want transparency. At the bottom will show you the size of the graphic when it's compressed and the guessed download speed on whatever internet connect method you choose (you can change this by clicking on it and selecting in the drop down what you'd like). The left will give you a toolbar for other options.

After you save it, you'll jump back to photoshop until the next time you want to save for the web. This is the same for version 6, 7, and CS.
