Best way to code a schedule sharer..

    Hello.
I'm looking to create a web-based database(?) kind of thing where students can input the following:
    -first name
    -last name
    -graduating class year
-their class schedule (i.e. have a field for 1st block through 8th block (blocks are just periods of time in which classes take up) and have them input the name and teacher of each class.)

then have every student be able to search by their friends' names to see their schedules.

What is the best way to do this? If it could be done in something as simple as Javascript that would be good, but if not, what should I use? I'm a beginning coder I guess, but I'm willing to learn enough to do this. It can't be that hard, right?

any help to get started is appreciated, lemme know if i need to clarify anything.

    thanks,
    kokesh

There's a lot involved to what you're proposing to do. You have:

    • Database design
    • Display screen design
    • Search screen design
    • Search script
    • Screen security (to prevent SQL injection attack)

That's just for starters, and if you don't know how to code in your scripting language of choice, you should take a step back and learn that before even starting such a project.

I'm not trying to discourage you from doing this, in fact I think something like this could be fun. Still, if you're new to coding, you have much to learn before you could begin.

As to the coding language of choice, PHP is a good one to use. You'd do well though to define requirements in detail first before deciding which scripting language to use.

Thanks for your reply. In the meantime I have stumbled on baseportal which is a seemingly good database system with a fairly powerful search. I'm still playing around with it to see if it will be good enough, and since I have little free time in which to do things like this, I'll probably go with something like baseportal for now. I'll let you know if I decide otherwise. Thanks again.
