Explain more what you're trying to do.

Notepad will edit PHP files... it won't run them. You need PHP installed on the server; unless you have a web server running on your computer (with PHP running) you will need to upload the files to your host (which must support PHP - most paid hosting will do).

i think he means saving as a php file,
well basically if there are quotes at the beginning and end of your file name so it does actually look like "index.php" it will save as php ext, if no luck try changing the file type to all files and just save as index.php it will save into php format aswell, your computer mite not no how to open a php file so better upload to web server, for testing php scripts try tripod.co.uk

Usually having the quotes there tells notepad to save the file as is with the .php extension and all. You also don't need to upload your files to test them. You can install a server and php onto your system quite easily.

Are you on linux? There are also programs that make installing a server on your system a breeze. The one I use is XAMPP. Its available for various operating systems. Its just an install package.

    Cool Beyond Notepad

I use Notepad++ because it's designed for editing code (It knows what a .PHP file is).

You should really check it out if you're still using notepad to edit code.

Supports saving linebreaks in MAC / WIN / UNIX format (which could be your problem... saving WIN linebreaks and uploading to a UNIX server.)

Look at some of the screenshots displaying syntax highlighting and multi views of documents (Look at one part of a file and edit the other.)
