    Content, linkage

There are two major aspects that influence SE ranking:
    1. Good, well-structured content, marked up with lean, semantic markup, and
    2. Linkage from other, high-ranking sites.

The added value of meta keywords is virtually none; for the sake of it, include 5-7 keywords that reflect the actual content of the page at hand, aka terms that accur in headings and are repeated often or at least high up in the document.
Long lists of keywords, or non-relevant keywords only hurt SE ranking.

    ... and accessibility!!!

And, shame on me, accessibility counts heavily as well!

Maybe by coincidence, maybe by devine intervention ALA published this very valuable article on how High Accessibility Is Effective Search Engine Optimization; at the end of the article there are even some pointers from Google themselves! Can you get more to the point!
    Regards,
    Ronald.

    Arrow

Google is the engine that gives extreme weightage to two things:

    1) Page Rank (PR)
What's the PR of your Web site? (Use Google toolbar to see that)

    2) Link popularity

Search with "link:www.yourWebsite.com" and "site:www.yourWebsite.com". If the results are healthy, your Web site is nicely SEOed. Contrary to that, if there 's a short response, try to link-exchange, affiliate, advertise with many many Web sites. Sadly for a new Web site, its a very very big effort.

Well you may add RSS content to your Web site and Google JavaScript advertising also to increase your SEO. Also let search engines (and other people; if they exist?) to syndicate your Web site content.

If you're serious and you plan a commercial/profitable Web site, seek a SEO strategist, spent dollars and get your Web site SEOed.

For further details, read out the documentation in your leisure hours, provided by Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Alexa and .. and .. more to know what they say themselves. (You can find it in their Web sites, itself)

Present days, MSN is more liberal than #1 Google.
