    Image Gallery

    Does anyone have any suggestions:

I need a xhtml valid image gallery powered by PHP and mySQL which I can create new galleries in etc - basically like wordpress with new posts, but an image gallery. I would like to be able to specify the images and then have it resize them to my specified size as well as being able to name each image underneath it.

    Thanks,

    Jamie.

Hmm the XHTML Valid part you might have to work on, but this seems to do what you want. Coppermine. It is free but something seems to be wrong with www.sourceforge.net at the moment.

My site is powered by WP, and I use Simple PHP Gallery...have a look. http://www.grantpalin.com/wp-gallery/.

SPG can be told to use your headers and footers from your WP files, or you can set up seperate ones if you wish. It comes with a configuration file where you can specify the max size of images, the size of resized version, and the size of thumbnail versions. And you can upload your images via FTP. When you visit the gallery, the script runs through all your images in the gallery folder and automatically generates resized (smaller) and thumbnail versions of each image, saving you the trouble.

One gripe I have with this is that there is no web interface, so to add captions and descriptions for your images and subgalleries, you have to manually edit and upload a text file to the gallery directory. It can get tedious.

It is XHTML compliant, and can easily be styled using CSS.

There's a new gallery system on the block: zenphoto. Not yet released, but supposed to be soon. It's looking pretty good (live demo!), and I think I will be giving it a try once it is available.

    Cheers

Zenphoto is EXACTLY what I'm looking for....too bad it's not out yet
I don't really know about SPG because I don't want it integrated with wordpress, I want it as a stand alone feature exactly like ZP - being able to view each gallery etc.

SPG is primarily a standalone gallery, but someone has ported it to a WP plugin, IIRC.

Ah yeah, forgot to mention that. I'm using the WP version so it has the same appearance as the rest of my site, which was one of my criteria. But whatever works for you.

And yes, zenphoto seems like it's going to be a great product. Funny thing is, I was thinking of creating my own gallery system just for the heck of it, but I'll wait for ZP to become available!

SPG doesn't integrate with WP per se, but it can be told to use your WP site's headers and footers, so it matches with the rest of the site, if you so wish. But either way you can easily still have your seperate galleries and subgalleries.

    For those who care...

    zenphoto is now in beta!

You can download the code and run it yourself. In the linked thread, issues are being raised and resolved - quickly! Someone has even gotten it to integrate with WP, in case you'd be interested in that.

Very good news. I'm going to be keeping a close eye on that site!

I'm having a play with it now. Got it working but it won't show me any thumbnails. I'm taking it that it automatically generates them. Think it's a .htaccess problems so gonna have a look in there.

I've gotten zenphoto running on my site: link. I'm on DreamHost (some people on the previously linked discussion about ZP have had some quirks with DH), and the gallery was a snap to set up. My thumbnails were all generated without problems.

I am still having difficulties in getting images to show up on my local setup however. Am working on it now.

That said, however, the systems appears to be a very nice one, and I love the features so far!

Yeah I've sorted my prob now - testing it at www.jamierees.net/zenphoto.
I'm going to use it on my main site. I'm wondering whether to install 0.8 beta on my main site and use it or wait until 1.0.

0.8's running fine tho at the moment. I couldn't get it to run locally either weirdly enough. Local setup is Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition w/SP1, Apache 2.0.54, PHP 5.0.4 and 4.3.11, mySQL, phpmyadmin etc...installed but wouldn't really generate any images and got a bit annoyed with all the error messages.

Heh, you have a thing for airplanes. Nice pictures!

I don't know what else is supposed to be in version 1.0...I guess I should check on that. I also don't know what upgrading will involve, maybe something like upgrading WordPress or something else...

I've got a pretty similar local setup, except Windows XP instead of 2003. I do' get any errors, but no pictures either. Still working on it...

Incidentally, Tristan (developer of zenphoto) has set up a zp frum on his site, so there should be some good information on there before too long.

    Keep at it!
