can this dynamic gallery be done?

Aloha I am trying to make a website that has a gallery that has two parts, the first is a photo and then right under that it will have a small text are for one or two sentences. Now that makes this different is that this needs to be setup so that people that know nothing at all can add and remove these parts easily.

I was wondering if it could even be done where all they need to do is using the web-host control panel they would just make a new folder then just upload what photos you want in that and an xml file with the text. Then using javascript or something on the gallery page it will look for all the folders like that then dynamically make that page bases on how many different folders there are with pics and xml files.

Can this be done without php? Any keywords that I can google or links to tutorials that might help me in learning what/how/if this can be done would help out tons.

Not really without some server-side language like php. With php you can automate more and make it simpler to use. Without it you will have to use ftp to upload and do much 'by hand'.

All you need is an interface with a few input fields (text and image upload) and a PHP script to process the input so that it generates a list out of it. The rest will be done with JS then. This would be the start of a very basic content management system (CMS). So, maybe you’re even doing more and installing a real CMS would justify?

Do the people that are uploading the photos and text need to register and log-in so they can do that? Or can 'anyone' just go ahead and upload stuff?

Can any of the people modify other person's photos? Or is each person locked into their own gallery?

Does a person (admin person) need to have control over ALL of the photos and be able to edit/add/delete anybody's photos?

Does the site need to be 'searchable' for key words in any of the text under the photos?

Is security an issue? Is it OK if anyone visiting the site copies the photos? Everyone is aware that their photos on the internet aren't protected? So maybe they need to be watermarked or low resolution so they can't be rendered useful?

Do the photos have to be displayed using a "lightbox" type of slideshow?

Does the website need to be "responsive", so it renders properly on any size screen, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc. ?

    -------

This is what we're talking about. Your question is too vague, and without describing what your website is for, or the specifications, we can't answer your question.

This is for a friend that is a real estate agent. When the site is done there will be a "sales" page that has a grid layout (responsive) each grid will have two parts...one photo and a small blurp. I am trying to make it so that my friend has a easy way that when he gets a new property for sale all he has to do is upload the pictures in a new folder then that is all, thus making the "sales" page a dynamic page. I was thinking that there might be some type of javascript, like jquery, that might help with this.

Here is an example of the folder layout for the site...
    -css
    --main.css
    -js
    -images
    -sales
    --kal302
    ---preview.jpg
    ---01.jpg
    ---blurp.j
    --kal303
    ---preview.jpg
    ---01.jpg
    ---02.jpg
    ---03.jpg
    ---blurp.txt
    -index.html
    -sales.html

Now this sales page would be like a template that has some type of script that when loaded it would check the "sales" folder and see how many folders are in there. Next it would find the "preview.jpg" and "blurp.txt", it will then make a new element with that pic and the text that is on the text file...then it will do the same thing for each folder.

His hosting site has a CMS and he knows how to use it to upload files he just is not the type of person you want to even open the html files because 95% of the time he will screw it up...lol...he just not good with computers.

Elaborate on what the CMS is and how it works.

    Is it WordPress?

The name is cPanel and you enter your username and password and that takes you to the "CMS". Once there you click on the option that you want like "file manager"...I really do not know what information to say here...a cms works because there are scripts that are "linked" to "buttons". Each "button" does different things that depend on the scripts that are linked to each button.

cPanel isn't really a CMS ... but maybe they have some kind of webpage editor that is for people that don't do programming?

I know no way of doing what you want without a server-side script, like something using PHP or Perl.

So the answer is no, it can't be done without using either PHP or Perl.

Do you know a couple of keywords for php that I could research that could get me on the right path to get this done.

You should purchase a WordPress responsive theme designed for real estate ... and then use WordPress for the website. That's my advice, because it doesn't sound like you have the experience to write your own scripts from scratch?

You can Google for many WP Responsive themes/templates.

I know I do not have the experience to write any thing more then basic scripts...I can not be-leave that your advice though is to "get a template" instead of giving a couple of keywords or terms to help someone that is wanting and trying to learn. If you notice in this whole topic I was not asking for someone to do this for me, nor did I ask how you do this; instead notice the fact I was asking could it be done and if so for just a couple of clues for areas for me to research.

I do not think telling someone that is here to learn to stop trying to learn and just use wordpress. I might not know as much about this as you do "sir" but I would hope that people of all levels of skill where aloud to be here and not just uber gods like you.

mlseim is giving you good advice, he's not trying to insult you or stop you from learning. To write a competent gallery is no small task. Especially one that is easy for untrained people to use. And even with the code in hand there will still be plenty to learn.

I really do apologize. I assumed you already used Google to find PHP upload examples:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=php+...pt&btnG=Search

Your question in post #1 was "could this be done without PHP". My answer was no.

So now, I've giving you advice on using WordPress ... but since you want to learn PHP, there are many tutorials you can find using Google, and tons of actual scripts you can try. You can also customize any of the scripts for your own purposes.

Read post #1 again, and if needed, please explain exactly what you want us to do for you. If you use a PHP script and have problems, we would be glad to help you troubleshoot. Post any PHP scripting that you are using where you might have trouble.

EDIT: and using WordPress is not "cheating" your ability to learn PHP. On the contrary. Any WP theme you use will not be exactly what you want, so you'll have to not only learn PHP, but learn WordPress Codex, javascripting, CSS, MySQL, and PHP.

If you notice I said "Are there any links or keywords that might help out for doing something like this in PHP?" 23 hours and 46 minutes before you made your first post because I already learned that you need to do php or the like to get this done. For the last 5 days and 12 post I have just been trying to get just one out of hundreds of thousands of people to give me just a few keywords that way I can do the research from there but it is proving very very hard.

Now that I know that I need to use PHP then that means I need to have a starting point...thus why this is my third or fourth time now asking...

"Are there any links or keywords that might help out for doing something like this in PHP?"

Its really not that hard I just need a few php jargon....something like...."Just load the RPCH of the DI$9493 then read up on elseIf of the looping array oh yeah and the API justMonkeysPHPBlahblah might help out a little. Hope that helps get lost and never comeback."

About wordpress If I was in School for webdesign and turned in my final project and it was a just a template that I changed the text and added a few pics to would that even get a B? Nope thus template sites like yahoo and wordpress are "cheating". (I use that word only because I am finding a hard time finding the right word.)

EDIT: PHP photo uploading is not what I am trying to do...6 days and people still think I am trying to make an upload some simple upload script.

    OK its like this...
ok the idea is very very simple and I hope that with the photos someone will understand what I am trying to do.

The left is the same where the webpage owner would make a new folder lets call it KAL300...on the right is where he puts the pics and txt files.

Now the idea is to make this page dynamic or "smart" by having it so that when a user goes to the page the page loads in the "sales" folder and goes "oh wow there are 5 folders KAL300 through KAL305." OK now the page goes "ok now with each of them I need to create a new page putting the photos right here here and here and the blurp there. NOw heres the page you asked for."
