my forum site was full of spam

    Hello
I have a forum site and since 7-8 months a lot of spambots registered and filled it with spam. finally today i was able to clean it up from my backup, as i just found some time. it wasnt a big site, only 500 posts in it. but still due to its good keyword domain, it was coming up in 2nd page or so when i was doing a google search. now it is gone. i can not even find my site on google if i type mysitename and then .com or write it in quotes.... so does it mean google permanently blacklisted my site? how can i fix this situation?

    i didnt do anything blackhat.

it was a regular vbulletin forum site. very little in use. but then spam users started to register. more and more by time. i couldnt deal with it as i was too busy at work. then it reached to may be million spam posts. then finally today i erased to current database and uploaded my previous good one back from 8 months ago. so now my site is clean, looks exactly like before all the spam.

now i check google and i can not see my site anywhere. except if i for example type something from my site in quotes only then it comes up.

Lol. You really can't do much about it. Take a look at how much this forum gets hit by spam and how much the admins/moderators have to work on that. It's a very annoying problem. Go to any forum, and you'll find tons of spam that mods and admins have to constantly remove. People build bots and tools to specifically target forums, especially vbulletin. There are certain measures you can take to alleviate the situation, but I'm not sure how much they'd help since I've never actually run a forum. Have you taken the measures talked about here?

Also, what did you do to rank your site before? I mean, since you consider it not to be "blackhat".

    Hi Ketanco,

Once your site was on the second page of Google search doesn't mean that your site will remain at the same position forever. Many things could cause this problem. The issue you have mention about spamming could be one of them, but there could be other reasons too. You have to post unique posts regularly and review others post to maintain the good position of your site in search engines. Also you need to do a little page SEO to keep the position stable or even better. Here are some basic tips for you: http://www.techyv.com/questions/basi...timization-seo

    Hi Ketanco,
You can search your site on other search engine if it is showing on that search engine, it means that your site is in Google sandbox, find all the backlinks of your website which is low quality and disavowed it, so that Google could not look at that site. Start high quality submission for your website to get indexed in Google.

What did I do to rank it? I bought a good domain name which included keyword / most part of keyword of that search phrase. I posted original posts myself regularly

In the link you provided, the moderating new members is out of question for me. I have no time for that. and I tried question and answer before.

So you are saying, the only thing to prevent spam is a human moderator to spare time for it?

anyway. what about google? ... will it take me back or i am blacklisted forever because of those spam posters?

I've never ran a forum before so I don't really know what you can or what plugins/modules you can add to minimize spam. Maybe a mod (or the people at vbulletin) can help shed some light on that.

I just know that people build tools (XRumer‎) specifically to spam forums, and every forum I've ever been a part of has a problem with spam. The bigger forums have more money to spend on killing off spam, but they struggle even more with it...getting thousands of new accounts that spam everyday. I've seen forums that decided to start charging money to register because of spam.

As for Google, I'd say stop worrying about it, but I know that won't happen.

There are a lot of things that can happen. I don't think these spam bots can cause you to be blacklisted unless they were linking to some really shady sites. Some people might also call this a "Google dance", but I don't agree with the typical definition of it. It's a dance if you jump around 1, 2, or 3 spots. It's a different story if you see the site go from the 2nd page to nowhere.

If you did any backlinking, then Google may have penalized you. Even if you don't do any link building, Google is fickle so they may penalize you. Your competition can also be spamming links to you so that can penalize you. A new site is always prone to penalties. I'd listen to probytes and use the disavow tool and get rid of any low quality links.

Google also does this thing where they penalize you and watch you. These penalties vary in severity and duration. They can be 1 month, 3 months, or even 6 months. They can be -5 (in rankings), -10, or -100. After your site falls, it can't get back up until it passes this "duration" period that they put on you. They watch to see if your site continues doing what it has been doing so just continue doing what you have been doing.

Long story short, I'd say just stick with the forum and be patient.

Your forum had ranking due to spam posts and such traffics, as you banned them so there is no activity on your forum thats why ranking is dropped.

You need to start with posting in your forum on regular basis, use any tool, plugin, to stop automated registration and posting, if you are using PHP then look for help in its support forum hot to stop spam.

If your forum on vBulletin, MyBB, SMF, try going to their support forum and you would be able to find any plugin, tool, coding help to stop spam.

For stopping automated registration, provide QA on your registration form, it would help a lot.
