    Are subfolders really necessary?

This is probably a silly question, but are subfolders really necessary? I mean, I get that it organizes all your web pages, but does it help with anything else?
What's so wrong with having all your files in the root directory?

You can do whatever you want. You can also give all your files random character sequences as names if that satisfies you. If you love having all files in the root directory, go ahead and do it, there is nothing wrong with it.

It's not really necessary. But if it makes it makes you more organized, then go for it. I agree with VIPStephan.

Not only does it help with organization, but if you pay attention to some of the top spots in a Google query, there are some subdirectory/subdomain links listed under the primary URL.

An example off the top of my head is searching Salesforce. Below the Salesforce search lists Login, Editions & Pricing, Careers, etc. By organizing your content search engines can better display results/folders/sub-directories your viewers may need. It takes awhile for this to take place, but placing all your files in the same directory isn't going to get you here.
