What is the ideal method for count the Backlinks

Hello,
Some time back link count is very confusing for me.
when i check back link of my site by any online tools it shows numbers of back links and when i check back link according google search query like-link:www.mysitename.com it shows 1,2 back link.
so why this happens and what is difference between this two.
please help me.

Dont use online tolls bcoz some of the tools wont cache the sites uptodate. If you use webmaster tools then you can easily find out the number of backlinks in your site.

There is a difference because there is no possible tool that can show you all the backlinks to your site.

The link: operator never really worked, and Google will never show you all the links to your site anyway...probably because Google doesn't want people trying to figure out their algorithms by analyzing thousands of sites.

The Google Webmaster tools shows you more, but even that doesn't show you all the backlinks and it's not like it's live data.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

simplest answer is: you can't really.
google's services will show you some of them, but since google ignors links with 'nofollow' like Link, you probably won't see links from forums and such.

you can't rely on http-referer either since that value is optional.

you also need to remember that most search engines list around 8% of the3 web and even Google only lists about double that so most web pages could link to you and the search engines would never know because they don't list those pages at all.

I just use Majestic SEO.
It's not perfect, but seems to give a better overall impression of links and their values.
