PHP along with MySQL (for the database) ... or ASP.net (on a Windows server?).

You can't use javascripting by itself.
The scriting needs to also be on the server-side (webhost server) for
processing things ... that's where PHP and MySQL are used.

You can mix javascripting with PHP (which is what AJAX is about).
JQuery is javascripting (in case you see that described).

@mlseim What do mean by you can't use javascript by itself?

@offcourse you can write html in notepad and that was not the question!
Your profile and comment is an add and I think that's against forum rules.

You said "online shop" ... I'm thinking a catalog of things with database features.

I assumed you might want to have a database with inventory of items, photos, prices.
Also, allowing a person to save information in case they wish to come back some other time.

But to answer your question about javascripting (or JQuery) ... "yes" ...

There are pure javascript only methods. I suppose they could use cookies too.
    Like this: http://simplecartjs.com/

    Here's another one: http://demo.robocreatif.com/plum/shop/index.html

They probably work just fine ... but you won't have any dynamic online inventory/catalog management.

I develop sites on Unix, Lunix and Windows, but Unix & Linux are more secure, for sure.
