    Thumbs up What to do next?

    I have been getting into web design this past year and have a good understanding of the areas i have worked it but im not sure what i should be learning to be a successful web designer.

    I have dabbled in HTML XHTML CSS JAVASCRIPT PHP XML. Which of these or any other languages should i try to get a much deeper understanding of? Also What skills do you personally have and value?

    My favorite so far seems to be PHP but i do only have a limited level of understanding and knowledge in it, of what i have dealt with it seems this has the most freedom to do whatever i want.

    My least favourite is XML and working with XSLT/XQuery etc it seems a lot of work for not a great deal of outcome.

    Thanks would like to hear whatever one things and suggests.

    Yes php would be your best bet. Also I would work more with javascript and ajax.

    Of course, since I'm a Coldfusion developer, I would be remiss if I didn't mention it..lol

    But CF is a specialized field. Its a server side like php, but more readable like html. Probably not as much out there for CF devs, but that's to our advantage!

    The best way to start is "Install Easy PHP and setup wordpress on it". Start editing wordpress theme codes and database.

    I too have been learning web development over the last couple of years for my own companies. It seems that php is the way forward as far as I am concerned as it gives me the ability to have "interactive websites" that can respond to peoiples enquiries. I have not come across anything I need to do that cannot be done this way. Reading through this thread, it has come to my attention that I have nio knowledge of cold fusion at all and mnaybe I need to brush up on the subject

    I think having JQuery in your arsenal is advantageous. You can create some cool effects with ease that make the user experience very rich. Learning SQL is very handy also. I started web development in PHP/MYSQL but have now gone over to ASP .NET and wouldn't go back. I enjoy working with SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio.

    I may sound out of place but, why are you learning web designing - to make money site or horning your skill. If its the later then PHP is teh most important since we already have WP and Joomla as a base to start our work . But if you are into making online money then I'm not sure how much they are going to help. Just my 2 cents
