Brand new at this! Help with displaying images please

    Hi there,

I am designing my first website, know very little and just learned basic HTML (8 week course).
I need some advice on where to find code that will display photos nicely. I would like something that acts like the marquee tag (moves across the screen only works in IE) Id prefer if this started once clicked on.

Course instructor suggested searching for java applets online

I want to display photographs and photos of my paintings. I am doing this for fun so I dont want to spend money or pay someone to design it. I am not planning on selling anything on the site, like I said just for fun. I might try a free web host thinking weebly as I can change the code.

Suggestions for blog vs website for Artists. I see most serous artists have both. I have a job and so the art is just a hobby, so not much time for it as I'd like I was thinking website but am now leaning towards blog???

I also spend little time online and am weary of downloading things from the net. Maybe just comfort level. So I prefer sites that offer the copy and paste rather than "download our file" option.

If you have suggestions for how and where to look for code for displaying images the way I want, I'd appreciate it. It is pretty overhwelming for someone starting out to search and then sift through all the info out there.
    Thanks for the help

I'm not sure what you will be able to do with Weebly.
You'll be uploading and customizing Javascripts (JQuery).

Only knowing HTML ... this will not be easy for you.

Why can't your course instructor give you someplace to
start with Javascripting, CSS or whatever you'll need?
Isn't that the point of being an "instructor"?

As with anything, you get out of it what you put into it. So if you are going to limit your solutions, you must also limit your expectations.

That said, I'm going to suggest a download There's a Javascript framework called jQuery and it performs the types of gallery effects your describe perfectly. It's free, but if you have no programming background the learning curve may be a bit steep. There are dozens of plugins that handle gallery image display but you still have to be able to understand how to implement the plugins.

If you're feeling a wee bit adventurous, your payoff could be significant... I'll see if I can find some links to examples of what you can accomplish using jQuery.

OK Here's one that provides pretty decent setup instructions.

    Hi thanks for the advice.
Fumigator- I am not averse to trying things, as you say may be frustrating but I am willing to give it a go. While I have essentially no coding skills, Im a fast learner, so hope it will be ok. I will check the download out and get back to you. May take a few days, doing this in my "spare" time

Mlseim- Course was HTML basics only ( he would not discuss other languages etc), it is over now so if I want to learn more got to sign up for another course. Think the instructor might have been doing the course to drum up clients for wed design and hosting. But it was a good place for me to start as I have no experience and this has opened my eyes to what's out there.
I have not yet tried to set anything up with weebly or some such site so maybe as you say I will find it frustrating and then move on to something else.

I am learning as I go, and there is so much to take in.
Thanks for the help. I will post what I have created for feedback when I get there, still want to get design down first.

Is there an easy way to create a thumbnail of the image ?. . . do I just resize it and save it as a different name?

If I saved the download as jquery.jpg and put it in my website file . . .what it is the tutorial referring to when it says
src="jquery.gallery.css" do I just change that to "jquery.jpg"?

Or am I missing something and I need to create a "gallery" as it asks for $('#id_of_gallery').gallery

These may seem like silly questions but this is the first time I have seen this stuff,], Am I in too deep??
    Thanks

Yeah just do them manually, or even better, use a batch conversion utility. Ideally you're in possession of software that can do batch image changes...

As for the download, you've now lost me. Why are you saving the download as jquery.jpg? It's a zip file. You need to unzip it and use the files as instructed. You also need to download the jQuery core from jquery.com. You may be in over your head so start kicking your legs and doggy paddle!

If you just want to display image in html
    <img src="url" alt="image text" />

If you want a marque sort of effect i think using flash will be a good idea. If you use flash you can play around with lot of good features of flash and will have a better control. If you have not worked on flash then its a good opportunity to learn it. It will be worth learning it. Its really great.

No. You must have been a member for a certain amount of time and contributed a certain number of time (don't quote me on this but I believe the current restrictions are 3 months and 5+ posts). We do this to filter drive-by spam. Please contribute towards to community before expecting something back.
