    Website conversion

I've had this website up for a couple of years now, and have been thinking about redoing the look and layout. I think it's kinda tired looking, and would like to put up a new layout with better colors and such. The problem is, I have no idea what I could do. Please take a look at my site and give ANY suggestions and opinions for what I can do with it. The content would be the same, I just want a different look. If you got an idea, just put it here.

First thing I notice: You need a Heros of Might and Magic logo on each page just to keep folks oriented (in case someone links directly to a file rather than the frameset file).

Second thing: Larger screen shots would be nice. Not too much larger, but some of the images look a little lost at 1280x resolution.

Third thing: How about a castle-brick background for the menus and a plain light-orange for the main pages? Since the menus use buttons, legibility won't be an issue (and make the buttons plain-background as well).

Fourth thing: If you're looking for a minor challenge, convert the site so it doesn't use frames.

Castle Brick Background? Too cheesy imho. But, I agree that the all orange background could be spiced up. Some thoughts:
    1) background to cccc99
2)333333 or 003333 for strong side bar accent
    3) remove frames
    4) If time permits, update navigation - use drop down menus from dynamic drive -right now there are too many clunky buttons on the homepage
5)For displaying multiple images - use dynmic drive script to create a highliting table similar to that used on photos.com display pages.

Just a few things to think about. Not trying to being critical - just trying to help. Good luck, however you choose to redesign it.

All right, it took some reading and trial and error, but I've de-framed my site. I have converted all the pages to PHP, and used PHP includes to include the navigation buttons on each page. Here is the new link:
    http://www.hommworld.net/Homm/index.php

Please have a look at the site and tell me what you think of it now. Besides the suggestions from Catman and mafunk (I'm gonna work on those), please let me know anything that you might like to see changed- I'm looking for opinions now.

A couple things to point out:
    1. Yes, I know about the big table surrounding each page. I've left those in for now, for testing and debugging purposes.
    2. If you click on some of the links on the top (Home, Links, Where to buy, etc) you'll notice that the top row of the table changes in size and the title graphic in the content section moves up or down. Has anyone else experienced this before? I haven't the least idea how that could be happening.

    Please, give me your opinions!

hmmm.... you could try putting the logo that is on the front page above the table... then use the page titles where they are?... then that'll hold the whole site together more...

your navigation looks like it could do with a little tidying up... but im not too sure what you're looking to do with it.. so i wont comment

ummm....... yeah, it'll look better when you've got rid of the tables...

All right, I've tweaked the main page a little.
    1. I changed the background colors of the page and the navigation bars.
    2. I moved a smaller version of the HoMM logo to the top of the table on the left, so it should always be visible.
    3. I got rid of the big layout table surrounding the page, which looks better.

I kinda like the new color contrast...what do you guys think of it?

First thing is first, I would use a different type of layout, not a frame, IMO, there ugly. And then change the colors a little. Id make new buttons. Use css instead of tables. And thats about it!

i like it, thats a great improvement

edit: if you are changeing the scrollbar, change the scrollbar-track-color to the brown or the green rather than the grey... that'll look better.

All right, I finally fixed the extra spacing problem. It took some rearranging the layout tables, but I did it.

As for the suggestions about the navigation buttons- I know. I've been thinking about it for some time. But I want to choose a replacement carefully or I may wind up really changing the look of the site. I'll have to think about it a bit, check out some other websites, search for alternate navigation systems, etc.

I'll try to resize those screenshots so they appear a little bigger.

I don't know how artistic you are here -- but why not do a theme? Fantasy sites can kick major arse if they keep you in a look... kinda' like the lord of the rings' site.

Something like a forest background with buttons that could be the eyes that glow in the shadows -- floating magic balls -- D&D type stuff gives you that feel -- typical celtic & medievel (spelling?) patterns (I know flamingpear.com has a filter for photoshop called SuperBlade Pro that makes these cool patterns in 3D gold, etc.). I only say that because your site is good -- but it isn't unique in that effect.

I don't know if you want to go that extreme, just popping out ideas here -- but you can find artists that will freehand hereos for you that look like they came straight out of warcraft or diablo.

The cooler the graphics, the cooler the storyline, the more they play.

...and, yes, it's better without frames.

Interesting ideas. I never thought of trying to do a theme before. I'll give it a try. I think that forest background is a good one. Thanks for the advice.
