    What makes a good banner?

    I have to design a banner ad (a button, too) for a web hosting company and am not sure what makes a good banner ad.

    I know it should stand out, but at the same time should not feature seizure-inducing flashing objects or anything like that.

    Here's what I have, but I'm not happy with it:

    PS: I realize this is cross-posted, and I appologize. I figured the multimedia forum would be best but then read that this one was about "web promotion" etc.

    The best way to attract more attention to it would be to have it move.

    Like you could have the 3 things come in one at a time from the left and stay there for a few seconds so people can read them, then start over.

    i agree with oracleguy that the three items should move. make them move slowly, like maybe soft bouncing or something. (lovely terminology, don't u think? ) ...but then on second thoughts if it's going to depict 'sharp' then maybe 'soft' wouldn't do....
    just a thought.
    otherwise i do think it's quite good.

    Actually it WILL be animated :P I forgot to mention that. In fact I was thinking of the same way of animating it as you guys were.

    Borgtex, I explained myself. I don't know why you felt you needed to post that... Oh well.

    Thanks for the ideas. Any more are very welcome

    Look the time I posted... I did it before your explanation in the other thread, and I didn't read this one (only seen that it was very similar). Anyway... it's all ok now

    on the one hand, moving is good for attracting attention. on the other hand, the blinkity-flash-flash and the bouncity-move-bounce, they're annoying. my suggestion, is that whatever it is, should be subtle. attracts the eye, but doesn't continually vie for your attention.

    good exmaple: moves, but slowly, so that it draws your attention, and then you can get back to the rest of the page.

    bad example: lots of fast paced movement, or flashing of things.

    Sweet, simple, vector graphics [Flash?] with no flashing bright colours.

    Your design is good however I reckon it might look good witha 1px black/dark gray border and without the bevel effect (which looks well weird on yours as it goes blue towards thr right).

    You said that this banner is for a web hosting company. But nowhere on the banner is this fact illustrated, like a special offer prize or sth. similar. There is no mentioning of hosting services at all - this company could make websites, consult, dance in (sharp) circles... I would put more emphasis on the "message" this banner should convey, in case the textual parts are under your command.

    To draw attention or not... in a recent "alertbox" column usability-guru Jakob Nielsen made some tests with Flash applications. It turned out that most of the testers failed to use these apps, because the starting point consisted itself of an animated area of the web page - and they instantly associated those moving parts with irrelevant banner ads. There seems to be a trend that the more attention banners try to get by flashing, making sounds, marquee texts... the more the user gets accustomed to that and neglects their presence.
    The key might be to find a good balance between getting attention and overstressing the user's nerves, and as others have suggested, a slow and smooth vector animation is certainly worth a try.

    Just my 0.02 cents.

    I'm not commenting on your banner. It's your site. You have a javascript error in your image array. Every time I click on a link to any page on your site I get a js error prompt message to debug (see attached pic), and have to click yes or no to continue. Just fix line 34....

    Code:
    img[0] = new Image();
    img[0].src = 'http://www.aaron-wright.com/images/nav.home.on.gif';
    img[1] = new Image();
    img[1].src = 'http://www.aaron-wright.com/images/nav.about.on.gif';
    img[2] = new Image();
    img[2].src = 'http://www.aaron-wright.com/images/nav.portfolio.on.gif';
    img[3] = new Image();
    img[3].src = 'http://www.aaron-wright.com/images/nav.services.on.gif';
    img[4] = new Image();
    img[4].src = 'http://www.aaron-wright.com/images/nav.entertainment.on.gif';
    The array is undefined.
    Just change to var img = new Array();
