Need Advice Making Top News Stories Website

    I created a news website (http://www.gabbr.com) php/mysql

I am currently trying to find the write method to get the "hottest" news stories (via RSS feeds) around the web in the past 24 hours.

I am not sure how I can do this.

    Methods I have tried:

    1. I have thousands of RSS feed content stored in a mySQL table. I removed the noisey words (like "the", "and", "or") and save the good words ("Barack+Obama", "Apple", "iPhone") as keywords. I then count the frequenceof keywords. The higher the count, the more the keyword is "talked about" on the web for the 24 hour period the more popular the topic. I then SELECT stories based on the top 10 keywords and display them.
**This doesn't work well because there are soooo many keywords that are difficult to remove
**This also doesn't work well because there is too much mySQL work that the CPU usage goes through the roof.

    2. I then tried to search for permalinks through the TEXT bodies of each RSS feed and save each permalink/URL address. The more frequent a permalink/URL address works then the more popular the permalink. So if a Yahoo! News item has a URL address of a guy throwing shoes at George Bush and this permalink exists in 40 different TEXT bodies of my RSS feed content table then it is deemed popular and will be displayed somewhere on the front news page.
**This doesn't work well because doing searches for permalinks through TEXT fields cripples the CPU usage

    3. I am trying to find a reliable source that posts keywords for the day (like "Yahoo! popular news" or "Google popular search words"). But I am unable to find a list of popular keywords that I can use to search as popular news items. If you know of any in RSS format, please send them to me. I then plan to use those keywords and SELECT popular news items and display them on the front page.

    4. Is there any other solution that I can use?

Your advice is kindly needed. Thanks.

    Top News Stories

What you display on your pages should be related to the CONTENT of your site - otherwise, why bother? If you have a cooking site but show sports stories then you're not helping yourself. What is your site about? Is it a general news site or is it more niche than that? There must be a purpose to what you're trying to do?
