need advice - web hosting server, domain name

    Hi,

My school-going son and I have designed a website for him. We now wish to host the website on a web server. Can you please provide some advice on the following issues?

    1. Web hosting server. What are the options? I am willing to spend a modest amount to avoid pop ups and aggressive banner ads of free web hosting servers.
    2. Domain name. What is the best way to obtain a domain name based on my sonís name?

    Thanks,

    MG.

Well there is www.freehostia.com which is free with no ads. Their accounts expire after a year but you can renew your account free of charge before they expire. They allow you to host a domain as well. I use the hosting found on www.siteflip.com

For a small site their first plan is fine. At just 12 dollars a year you can't beat it.

IMO its best to get your domain separate from your hosting package. Some companies tend to keep your domain "hostage" if you wanted to transfer it else where when they have your hosting plan as well. I buy my domains from www.godaddy.com, they have loads of options and are decently priced. Just be sure to keep up with the renew dates. They do send you an email months in advance of when your domain will expire.

You could even host the site yourself on your own computer but that would require that the computer is always on if you want the site always available and you would also need to have knowledge of server security. Its best to go with a hosting company as they normally take care of this for you.

What type of site is it that you wanted to host?

It is just a basic site featuring his information, pics and a few favorite links. My aim was to teach him some coding.

    Thanks again,

    MG.

i was going to suggest freehostia also, thats who i use. I'm on their basic plan of $1.95/mo and im paid till 2012 support is awsome and your not paying a bunch for features that you dont/wont use.

Their free plan doesnt have popups or any ads, but you cant hotlink anything or use smtp. the basic ($1.95/mo) plan you can hotlink and use smtp

I consider GODADDY as the best domain registrar. Coming to web hosting, why do you think to host with a free server? There are many affordable web hosting companies. Just look for the best something like BLUEHOST. It is always better to host with a paid one. Avoid free one's.
