    Choose the right web programming language

    Hi,

    I'm new to web programming, can anyone tell me which progamming language is the simplest and easiest to build my web site. I'm trying to build a site which can help me to learn chinese character.

    Basically my web site will display a random chinese character (from lots of image file in a folder directory) and each time a character (image .jpg) is displayed, it will show also the meaning of the character (like a caption for the image file).
    What is the most suitable programming language to use ?? do i need a database ??

    and this is the next phase, i planned to have a test game too in my site where a random chinese character is displayed, u will have to pick the correct meaning from a multiple answer (like the link below).

    http://www.digitaldialects.com/Spanish/Phrases.htm
    Someone told me this site runs javascript but which area in javascript do i need to focus on ?? Please advise ??

    Appreciate, thank q.

    'Someone' lied to you, that site runs on flash.
    For you're first part, any server side language can do that. Its just a matter of randomly selecting an image or generating it via slideshow idea. A database is not required. Since you want to add more information to an image, I would actually recommend the use of a database. It will let you select an image path with a description from the database much easier than looking up the corresponding description from a flat file of some sorts.

    As for the game, if you want it of the same class as shown in you're link, you'll need to look at using flash or java for that. If you don't mind it being more static in nature you can do it with any server side language with a bit of javascript of you wanted to add some flair to it. For that, you'd focus on form controls and AJAX if you wanted to give it a more dynamic feel.
    PHP Code:
    header('HTTP/1.1 420 Enhance Your Calm');

    To add on to Fou's:

    PHP is easier to learn than JSP and ASP (and it happens to be free) so I recommend that for your server-side script: http://www.php.net

    MySQL is the easiest to use database language and has tons of support from PHP: http://www.mysql.com

    Javascript (your client-side script) is a fairly easy pick-up and has a ridiculous amount of support and tutorials online: http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp
