Need advice for seeking web hosting

My current provider is fine...it got me started, but I'm finding it doesn't support the features I might like to have. So, I'm looking around for possible hosting opportunities. Features I'm looking for include: CGI/Perl, PHP, SSI, multimedia, FTP, Control Panels, etc. I'm just looking for a good host for a personal website- it's not for a business or anything. That said, I'm looking for something that's hopefully free, or charges a few dollars a month. I've found a few possibilities so far. Please put your thoughts here.

-free domain name with linux account

    http://www.win2000hoster.com/plans3.html
    -light plan

    http://itranquil.net/hosting.htm

    http://www.webhostingmall.com/
    -list of hosting sites

Does anybody have advice, or know of any sites that meet the criteria I provided? If so, please let me know!

Seeing as this is the best place I have come across to date, I suggest www.agorahosting.com - it is really cheap and offers a lot for what you pay.

To think about it, cyberwebhosting looks really good too.

I'm always very wary of companies like agora that offer hosting for so cheap. Think about it, their ROI has got to be small, which means they need tons of customers to turn a profit. So now they have a profit, but lots of customers to support. Do their profits afford them enough to have adequate support? I doubt it.

They have their own multi-million dollar data center and they charge $3/mo? They must have some deep-pocketed (and stupid) investors.

I'd stay away from places like these. They've just got that dot-com vibe (the bad one)

    Just my 2¢

P.S. If you check the details of their plans, getting MySql with their Linux hosting will cost you $115 a year extra (~$9.58/mo)

I get all that for $6.95 from a couple guys who don't BS. Ya, they live here in town, I've shaken their hands. Good couple of guys. PM me if you're interested, I host www.peterbailey.net with them.

I have no need for mySQL, or Access, or SSL, or any of that really advanced stuff. And I'm looking for something cheap.

Seriously, how do you define cheap? Anything under $10/mo is what I would call cheap.

Well, I'm in Canada, so I want to be careful what I buy from the States because of the lousy exchange rate. I guess under $5 a month would be cheap. Or $50-60 a year.

    lunarpages

After having alot of dificulty with a few other providers, ive found one which is great.

    lunarpages.com

They are maybe a bit more expensive than you wanted, but really you can customize what you get. They offer 2 plans but you can get the lower plan and then add (for minimal $) extras. I needed 2 mysql DBs and the lower plan comes with one, I was able to add it on cheep. They are also nice people to deal with which is all the difference in the world.

im an affiliate for them, now too so if you ise them , use this link:
    lunarpages.com (thanks!)

AS FOR CANADA...well, i used hostingshot.com up there, and they suck more than is mentionable..... So whatever you do, stay away from that. The rest of canada seems ok...

Good Luck, Ive used alot of different people, and I know how difficult to decide this can be!

    Ask for reviews @ www.webhostingtalk.com

You'll probably find that most are kids on their lunch hour.
