Search engine linking to out-of-date pages.

I have made a website but when I search it in google using keywords, i often get links to subpages which are out of date and no longer exist. How can I update this so the link always connects to index.html, the root of my site?

a request to a page that no longer exists must return a HTTP 404 status code from the server and google work in this case but must wait to reindex the site.
about oudated pages, you must use a sitemap, see sitemap.org for details and google webmaster tools.
