Exclamation Mailing Lists

hi,

was just wondering what's the easiest way of developing a mailing list? i basically want the user to enter their email address on my website and have it saved in a text file. so i can then copy and paste the email in my email account and send them emails. or is there a much simpler way! i thought about using php, i've used it at uni but it would be a major hassle to install a server and then php itself on my pc at home. what other hassle free coding scripts could i use to do this?

hope you can help!

You don't need PHP on your computer if you have a website
hosted with a webhost ...

PHP is a server-side language, meaning it is probably
already on your webhost's server (where you have your website).
Who is your webhost?

You can do a simple test by creating a file called "test.php"
and then uploading it to your website.
Go to the URL (your script) and see what happens:

This is what's in the file "test.php":
PHP Code:
<?php
$x
=4;
$y=5;
$z=$x+$y;
echo
"Here is the total: $z";
?>

Yeah, most web hosting providers offer a canned mailing list manger called something like PhpMailingList. You can usually install it via Fastastico if you have that in your cPanel. Other than using a canned mailing list package you would have to write your own - PHP would be a good choice to write it in and store your data in MySQL.

Javascript only works with the browser, so no you cannot use that. Only server side languages (PHP, ASP, etc) have the ability to send email. You really don't want to be manually editing your mailing list, so I recommend using either a script or a service.

You don't need to install PHP on your local computer, because it only needs to be on your web host. So I don't know who your host is, but theres a 95% chance that it is already on there (unless you have setup a server yourself...in which case adding PHP wouldn't be that hard).

There are also mailing list services out there which vary from free to expensive, and you wouldn't have to figure out how to use or set it up on your server.
