    AW Stats

    Hello there,

I have a website for my music production company. We write music for TV, Films and artists.

    Here is the linky

I have installed a stats page so I can see how much bandwidth is getting used etc. It also shows me what page people have come from when they have clicked on a link to get to my site.

What I don't understand is sometimes I see a site that is new to me... obviously music related but on the stats it shows 'hits 1' but 'pages 0' .

Could anyone tell me whats going on there?

    It's AWStats.

    Thanks.

the number of hits depends on some things like how big is the page, what the user agent request, request protocol so this case could have many causes, two of them are:
    - page loading not finished, see the bottom of stats http status code 206 row
    - user agent request HEAD just for checking/traking the page, usualy google do that

more specific info can find in your server log about some situation.

    regards

I don't quite understand what you are telling me.

I'm talking about the 'links from an external page section' .

Also what I didn't say is I'll visit the site... but there is no reference to my site there. So why is it in the 'links from an external page section'.?

awstat is a server log analyzer, each line in log is a hit and a page to be seen need, in general, more then one hit.
Therefor when awstat read the log, put the external link to the 'links from an external page section' and put 0 pages when:
    - for some reason the page is not finished to load, that is partial content or HTTP status code 206
    - the user agent don't want your page, just check if exist that means a HEAD request
    - any other reasons in same category

Also what I didn't say is I'll visit the site... but there is no reference to my site there. So why is it in the 'links from an external page section'.?
that don't mean that don't was. A simple reference in a blog is the best example. Same efect if I put a link on a page, access it and remove from that page, all this in 3-4 minute.
Also same efect if I use some script to see when you change the page, search for rss, ...

I hope now is more clear.

    regards

    you are wellcome,
Log analyzers are not accurate and have some problems, all of them, , but are in general acceptable.

I don't know if this is the case but check if they copy the flash. As far as I know is very easy to modify a flash. That is another explanation for page 0 stuff,

    Thanks ok.

Btw. Also, how reliable is it when it tells you how many people have bookmarked the page? I have high percentage of people bookmarking the page - so high that i think its unlikely.

What does it base this info?

I don't really know, . Few times the number of visitors was less then the number of bookmarked page. This could be true because one visitor could bookmark same page more then once or more pages of the same site. Anyway is hard to extract something usefull from this, more apropriate, in my opinion are visits/visitors, page/visit, uniq visitor, total visit and related.

I use hits/visit, bandwidth and HTTP Error codes to see if is everything ok and/or can be something improved.

    regards

Your "hits 1, pages 0" may come from that other site hotlinking to an image on your site - you mentioned an mp3 that was similar - are you sure they're not just linking to your mp3 on your site?

    lol.

Yea, That's basically what I've been doing. Because there are a fair amount of mp3s on the site I can judge how much interest there have been by how much bandwidth has been used.

Sorry I meant mp3 player, but yea you could be right. Though that'd be a bit naughty of them . They might been have copied the code for the flash player and forgotten to change a URL or something.

It's the second time its happend so It got me wondering.

Thanks again for the help guys.
