I'm trying something wierd here, so please bear with me?

Ok, so I've got a computer hooked up to my sony 42" flat screen. I thought it would be awesome if I could start coding up some web pages that will use links to files to open them instead of having to click on icons and what not. I figured, design a windows interface using an active desktop that is runnig off of my local host. The idea is to just have a navigational windows that I designed using php, html, etc. I've hit my first brick wall in the form of some lagging. When I will open a media file in regular old windows, it'll just load on up and be done with. While trying to open the same sorta files using html links, it loads them through the browser before it opens them, and it also is constantly asking me which application to open it with even though it has a checked box that tells it to use the same media player for this file type every time. So what I guess I'm getting at is, is there a way to link to a local file on a web page that is being served locally where instead of using the internet explorer (I use mozilla firefox) to open the file, I can send it some sort of windows command that says, hey, open with me every time?

Firefox always has this option when you download a file. It gives the option of open with and then you can check the box to remember to do that for those types of files.

After talking to a friend of mine who's intelligence dwarf's mine like an elephant dwarfs an ant, he suggested I start using the "Local Streaming Media Web Pages". If that helps to explain this better. The concept is still there, I need a link that will open a media file stored locally without trying to download it. Without getting a prompt that asks you if you want to download it or open it. I want a button that will open a media file at the same speed windows without lagging it.
