    Self managing a domain

    Hello Everyone:

I have registered a domain name and I want to manage it myself. dollarhost.com whom I registered the name with want the following information of the new server:

    New DNS name servers:
    Primary DNS server:
    Primary IP address:
    Secondary DNS server:
    Secondary IP address:

Isn't the IP address and DNS server the same thing? Any help on how to provided them with the above info would be great. Thanks

IP address and DNS can be the same. What DNS (Domain Name Service) what it does is translates the domain name into an ip address. So instead of having to type the ip address in for codingforums.com for example, all you have to type is 'codingforums.com' and a DNS server will translate the domain name to the IP.

The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned. Thats why if you register a domain or makes changes to its configurations it says it may take like 24 hours for it to work properly because all the DNS servers on the internet need to "refresh" so to speak.

You really only need to provide a primary IP and DNS but usually people have at least a secondary DNS so if there is some problem with the primary the site still works. The IP address would be the IP address on the internet side of your host. And you host should be able to provide you with their DNS information.
