    How's this for a site?

    http://www.waxmans.co.uk

Pure excellence in Flash (I'm presuming). How in the hell?

...to what are you referring, what I saw was just a pretty basic flash site.

I hate those "page turning" style flash sites. They're so slow and clunky. If I wanted to turn a page I would have asked for a print catalog.

Hmm, yeah… If I were average Joe that doesn’t know a poop about website design I would probably find that effect cool - and it might even be a cool effect by itself. However, the website is pretty poor and totally off-key regarding current website development practices.

Well, they are not claiming that they have invented website design and charge money to do exactlythis but in my opinion this flash stuff is pretty needless and boring. I’ve seen better effects with CSS and JavaScript - and all much more search engine friendly and accessible than this one.

Did I mention that I hate Flash on websites? There are certainly good things you can do but as with JavaScript in the early days most Flash things on websites are just displaced, annyoing, and useless.

But that’s just my €0.02. Sorry if I spoke bad about your friend’s website.

You didn't... and 'Ouch', that hurt! I liked it anyway... not knowing much about Flash or anything and being pleased by very small things makes me kinda woop for joy at something like that. Oh well...

    ahhh, you're just easily impressed
When people post stuff like this I always think I'm missing something. There should be like a rule, if you're goin g to say something is like 'wow thats awesome' then you need to say WHAT about it is awesome, just cynical old bird like me dont just get confused and assume we've missed something

If you still think flash is "displaced, annoying, and useless" after seeing this website, then there must be something wrong with you!

I agree it is annoying even after seeing that site. Especially when entire sites are built out of it and you have to wait a decade for it to load.

If I wasn't just looking at that website to see if it had some nice flash on it but rather actually searching for information I required, I wouldn't be likely to stay on that site very long to look because of the amount of time required to retrieve the information I wanted.

Don't get me wrong, I find that site cool and impressive but from a practical point of view personally I view it as useless.

I still agree with his sentiments - while the site may be 'impressive' to some and certainly pretty - its annoying and unecessary. *However* I dont begrudge them for doing it - it is, in this case, appropriate - they are a 'new media' design company - they're supposed to show off on their site. Same as a 'web 2.0' designer would show off their clean efficient layouts and curves etc on their portfolio. Sadly there is a market for this kind of crap and they happen to be showing on their site that they are good at it. But its pointless 'interactivity' for the sake of it. I dont need my content to fly in from the sides or grow from the center of my screen, I dont need it to blink, flash, spin or light up. I want the information I requested and I want it now. It took 11 seconds for their portfolio page to display - and only 2.5s of that was page load time - the rest was pointless animations. After loading the page, it then took min 4s to load each item from their portfolio (and from a design point of view - listing everything you've ever done in your portfolio is a bit of a no, no)

....dont even get me started on websites that play music!

Flash has its place and it can do some neat stuff that would be difficult to do in any other way BUT full websites built in flash are a complete turn-off for me. I have seen flash used tastefully in websites - where you have to right click to be sure it is flash, thats great - a good use of the technology but pointless flashterbation has me hitting the back button

Yes, I know this website and it’s certainly impressing what can be done with flash (and great graphic design). But I can just second what the others, especially NancyJ, already stated. This website is a great show-off of their skills and abilities but for me as user this is just too much already…

The options the user has are just overwhelming, a thousand blinking things and buttons, a very small text size (in combination with a lot of text in some places), scrollbars that aren’t easily recognizable as such. Flash is entrapping to do such extravagant things, yet it’s not said that those things are always a good choice.

And as I said: most Flash objects - not all of ’em - are displaced and annoying. An example for great use of Flash is sIFR, for example. And I guess the waxman website would work just as well without the page turning animation.
A good example for that would be the portfolio of a designer that had a design submitted at CSSzengarden: http://www.rosefu.net/ - looks even nicer (although the images seem to be fairly large too) and is much more accessible.

P.S.: I just noticed the funny things that happen on the 2advanced website if I switch off my styles.

that site's really cool and all, and I know talented flash designers can make really, really awesome effects, but I still wouldn't want my site to be all-flash, no matter how cool it be.
