    Sun Giving Away Free OS

    Full Article - http://www.lostcoders.net/index-single-381.htm

    Anyone seen this before?

Good marketing I suppose, but it's a hell of a lot of money to invest in a freebie...

...linux is eating away at SUN much more effectively than it is eating away as MS .
SUN is simply changing to the linux business model of making money on support contracts in the hope that that can save it, but linux is open-source , solaris is closed source , I doubt they have gone far enough to stop the decay.

If you are already using solaris it may stop you from wandering off to linux , but I doubt it will attract many converts.
    resistance is...

MVC is the current buzz in web application architectures. It comes from event-driven desktop application design and doesn't fit into web application design very well. But luckily nobody really knows what MVC means, so we can call our presentation layer separation mechanism MVC and move on. (Rasmus Lerdorf)

Sun also has promised make the underlying code of Solaris available under an open-source license, though the details have not been released. With access to the code, Solaris users will be able to take advantage of its features when developing their own software and systems.
It's an interesting tactic to dump $500 mil into an OS then charge nothing for it but if they think they'll make more money from support for it than they would for licensing and distributing it, then I guess counting on business' demands to cut costs could work for them. It will probably be hard to break even on it, let alone profit from it though.

I tried downloading becuase it had the word 'free' and 'os' in it even though ive got no idea what the client target for this os is, Home or buisness, but when I started the download it dropped down to a horridly slow pace 30 kbps was good...Im on a '3mbps' cable connection too.

Well I think the $500M is probably misleading (its an existing OS after all) but I was under the impression that the code was not going to be open-source (although initially that was the infomercial )

I thought that solaris was a server os not used for fun (has no real programs exept server software) and is written for sparc cpu-s (has a normal version too). Is trusted solaris free too?

When I go to that URL it takes me to http://www.search.lostcoders.net/

Is the page no longer there or am I missing something here?

You're not missing anything, the article is either deleted or has been moved.

As for searching for it, "lost coder" seems like a wholly appropriate name for that site.
